SET Event - Safeguarding in a Digital World: Learning from Voices and Experiences of Young People

   

Southend, Essex and Thurrock are pleased to offer the opportunity to attend training delivered by Dr Peter Buzzi.  We are offering two sessions, Part 1 for those of you that were not able to attend the previous session and Part 2 which is a follow on session.

Part 1

This presentation offers a glimpse into experiences of young people and the impact of digital technologies on their development and well-being.  There drawing on case examples we will examine the following:-

1. How young people become invisible to services, parents and professionals.
2. Serious ramifications of some of the safeguarding decisions that are made with the best of intentions;
3. Some of the difficulties to partnership working and to identifying and communicating risks across services;
4. An evidence-informed approach to identifying online risk and resilience and embedding online safeguarding across services;
5. A person-centered and evidence-informed framework to holistic safeguarding with a focus on identify, relationships and well-being.

Part 2

Building on the discussion from the introductory session (Part 1), this session will offer:-

1. A child centered framework for partnership working and direct work that supports children's identify and development
2. A child-centered approach for building resilience and better identifying, communicating and managing risks of harm
3. Tools for direct work with young people that supports their identity, relationships, development and well-being

Young people spend an increasing amount of time online and if anything, the pandemic has demonstrated that both the use as well as lack of access to digital technologies, have significant implications for people's lives, identities, relationships and well-being.  Therefore, this presentation will examine some of the systemic challenges to online safeguarding and offers an evidence-based approaches to effective safeguarding and well-being of children, adults and families who access services

Dr Peter Buzzi (@DrPeterBuzzi) is the director of the Research and Management Consultancy Centre (RMCC) and the Centre for Safeguarding and Relational and Digital Practice and Research.  He has led multiple largescale public and private sector research and transformation projects in UK and overseas including intergovernmental knowledge transfer projects by UNDP and is currently leading a national research and practice development project involving a number of local authorities and national organisations in England.  

He has authored and co-authored various books and articles including "Different Voices: Communication across cultures" by Routledge, "Motherhood online: A reflection on transnational adoptions" by Cambridge Scholar Press, "Safeguarding Children and Young People Online" and "Social Media and Social Work: Implications and Opportunities for Practice" by Policy Press, and "Social Work and COVID-19: Relationship-based Practice in a Global Pandemic".  His upcoming books include "Born Digital and Raised Social:  Childhood, Growing Up and Parenting in the age of digital anxiety and moral panic".
